European Giant Legless Lizard For Sale

Ophisaurus apodus

Also known as the Russian Legless Lizard, or the Sheltopusik, when it comes to truly remarkable lizards, a picture is worth a thousand words.  Though it resembles a snake, as do the other 'glass lizards', this animal is clearly a lizard possessing a fleshy, rather than forked tongue, ears, tail autonomy, and all of the other hallmarks of a lizard.  But what separates this lizard from its peers is, above all, it's sheer size.  These animals can reach up to four feet in length, absolutely massive for a legless lizard, and are reasonably temperate climate burrowers.  Uncommon in captivity, with captive breeding all but unheard of, these are imported animals, but are they do well in captivity and adapt well, as long as their needs are met.  They'll require a sizable enclosure, in which they can stretch out and burrow, with something the size of a 55 gallon being a recommended minimum.  They also need cooler temperatures than most are used to, with daytime temps around 70 - 80F, and night temps about 10 degrees lower.  A soft medium in which the animals can burrow should be provided, and we recommend that it run deep, since they are quite large after all.  Largely insectivores, they'll also take small rodents as adults, but should only be offered prey smaller than the width of their head to ensure they can swallow it safely.  These animals are rarely available, and their habits are not well documented in captivity, so grab a pair and share what you learn with the community!

Bottom Line?

Not the best idea for someone new to the wild world of reptiles, the Sheltopusik is a very large, temperate legless lizard, preferring cooler temps and lots of room to burrow; it feeds primarily on insects, and breeding is very poorly documented, so if you think you've got what it takes, give it a whirl and teach the rest of us!
